London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers responding to an emergency call on June 5th found Talay Riley in the garden of a residential property in the Silvertown district. The 35-year-old artist was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Three people were arrested on suspicion of murder. A 27-year-old man was released on bail pending further inquiries, while a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were released with no further action taken. The investigation continues.
“This is a tragic incident and my thoughts remain with Mark’s family and loved ones,” said Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, who is leading the investigation. “Our investigation continues at pace. I would like to appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time of this incident to speak to police. We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who might have CCTV or other footage from the morning of the incident that could assist our investigation.”
In dance music, Talay Riley‘s touch reached some of the genre’s biggest records. He co-wrote and featured on Tiësto and KSHMR‘s 2017 single ‘Harder’, and co-wrote ‘Like I Do’, the 2018 collaboration between David Guetta, Martin Garrix and Brooks. Both records remain staples of modern festival sets.
His broader catalogue extended deep into the pop and R&B worlds. Riley wrote records for Britney Spears, Usher, Chris Brown, Jason Derulo, Iggy Azalea, Nick Jonas, Dua Lipa and many others. He also co-wrote Khalid‘s global hit ‘Young Dumb & Broke’, which is on the verge of reaching two billion streams on Spotify.
His songwriting also earned him one of the music industry’s highest honours. Riley won a Grammy for co-writing ‘Lights On’ from H.E.R.‘s self-titled debut album, which won Best R&B Album at the 61st Grammy Awards. The recognition cemented his reputation as one of the most versatile and respected writers of his generation.
Riley‘s family characterised him as a “beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend” in a statement. “He brought love, light, and joy to our family and to all who knew him. We will always cherish his kindness, beautiful spirit, and remarkable talent. His presence touched many lives, and his memory will remain in our hearts forever. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
