Crucially, ‘Mirage’ marks a return to electronic music. As a result, the project closes a circle that Bangalter opened with his 2023 solo album ‘Mythologies’, which was entirely orchestral and had no electronic elements at all.
Notably, the album continues his post-Daft Punk evolution as a composer. Bangalter has gradually moved deeper into orchestral and contemporary classical work since the duo’s 2021 split. Furthermore, the ballet brief has given him the structure to build a body of work that lives somewhere between dance, score and electronic experimentation.
Meanwhile, the project leans into restraint. The 50 minutes of music are designed to score movement and presence. Indeed, the resulting album reads more as a long-form composition than a club record, even with its electronic palette restored.
Equally, ‘Mirage’ arrives off a packed recent stretch for Bangalter. He recently delivered a ‘Circonvolutions’ remix for the new CHANEL 12-inch vinyl. Furthermore, he reunited with Fred again.. at the USB002 108-hour event at Alexandra Palace earlier this year.
Still, the album sits as a major statement on his terms. Crucially, Thomas Bangalter keeps redefining what life after Daft Punk looks like, weaving ballet, orchestra and electronic music into a single, deeply personal arc.
