Three Drives’ trance classic ‘Greece 2000’ turns 29 years old

Three Drives‘ ‘Greece 2000’ has officially turned 29 years old. The Dutch duo’s late-90s trance classic remains one of the most emotionally effective hooks of the era, still working dancefloors nearly three decades later.

Crucially, the duo behind it is Erik de Koning and Ton van Empel. As Three Drives, they built ‘Greece 2000’ on long atmospheric builds, Mediterranean warmth and hypnotic percussion. As a result, the record stood apart from the harder uplifting trance of the era.

Notably, the track became synonymous with Ibiza terrace culture. ‘Greece 2000’ sat naturally alongside sets from Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold. Furthermore, the restraint and groove made it a progressive trance warm-up favourite across the White Isle.

Meanwhile, the chart story confirmed it. The 1999 Hooj Choons reissue pushed the track into the club mainstream, peaking at number 12 on the UK singles chart and number 1 on the UK dance chart. Indeed, it never crossed into pure pop but dominated dancefloors instead.

Equally, the remix legacy is staggering. The catalogue runs past 50 versions. Man With No Name‘s goa-trance interpretation, York‘s Balearic rework and Olav Basoski‘s funky dub became collector’s items. In short, Markus Schulz, Vintage Culture and Max Styler have all reimagined it since.

Still, the endurance comes down to craft. That eight-minute evolution over aggressive drops, the instantly recognisable melody, and the ability to sit in progressive, trance, melodic house and even techno sets. Crucially, that combination explains why ‘Greece 2000’ still moves dancefloors at 29.
