Armin van Buuren is best known for taking trance to the biggest festival stages on the planet — but the Dutch icon is quietly building one of the most compelling side projects of his career. The State of Trance host has just played his biggest piano show to date, and it’s a full 180 from the mainstage madness.
Taking to Instagram to share the moment, Armin revealed he performed for 1,100 people at the beautiful Caprera Openluchttheater in Bloemendaal, the Netherlands — an intimate open-air amphitheatre nestled in the dunes just outside Amsterdam. Backed by a full orchestra, alongside pianist Geronimo Snijtsheuvel and his team, it was an evening that traded club-ready energy for something much more emotional.
“Last night was just pure magic,” Armin wrote. “Yesterday I played my biggest piano show to date, a show in front of 1,100 people in this amazing open-air theatre. Much love to the orchestra, Geronimo Snijtsheuvel and the entire team for making this possible. I’m so proud to see where the piano journey has taken us. I never thought I’d play this big of a show, so a big thank you to everyone who came last night and to all the previous ones — it truly means a lot. Can’t wait for the next one!”
The piano journey is a passion project Armin has been building on for years now, reworking his own trance classics into stripped-down orchestral arrangements that lean into the melodic core of his catalogue. Fans have long loved it, and events like the Caprera show prove there’s a growing audience hungry for this softer side of his artistry.
For a producer who’s headlined every major festival on earth — from Tomorrowland to Ultra to A State of Trance’s own arena spectacles — the fact that a 1,100-cap piano show now qualifies as a career milestone speaks volumes. It’s a reminder that Armin’s musical range extends far beyond 138 BPM. Watch the moment below.
