Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter has opened up about one of the most celebrated moments in the duo's career - and revealed that the process wasn't always as glamorous as the finished product suggests. In a new appearance on the A24 Podcast, the co-founder admitted that composing the score for Disney's 2010 sci-fi sequel TRON: Legacy often felt "limiting" and "depressing." (Full episode via A24. According to Bangalter, many of the ideas Daft Punk brought to the sessions had to be abandoned along the way – because the music needed to leave space for the film’s dialogue and character performances rather than compete with them. It’s a very different kind of restriction to the one dance music producers face on a club record, and one that clearly took an emotional toll during the process.

Despite those in-the-moment frustrations, the finished TRON: Legacy soundtrack has gone on to be regarded as one of the most celebrated film scores of the 21st century. Blending Daft Punk’s signature electronic sound with a full 85-piece orchestra, tracks like ‘Derezzed’, ‘The Grid’ and ‘End of Line’ have taken on lives of their own well beyond the film, becoming genuine touchstones for electronic music’s crossover into major Hollywood scoring.

The Thomas Bangalter interview arrives at a moment where all things Daft Punk continue to captivate – from ongoing archival reveals to the duo’s members quietly stepping back into the public conversation. And even if the TRON: Legacy process felt creatively cramped at the time, the legacy of the score has only grown with age. It’s a fascinating reminder that some of the most beloved bodies of work in electronic music history were, for their creators, defined as much by what they had to let go of as by what made the final cut.
