Ibiza nightclub licenses for new venues will be frozen under the island's upcoming Tourism Intervention Plan (PIAT), the First Vice President of the Ibiza Council, Mariano Juan, has confirmed. Local outlet Ibiza2day first reported the announcement.
According to Juan, the proposal isn’t about shutting down existing venues — Pacha, Amnesia, Hï Ibiza, UNVRS, Ushuaïa and DC10 will all continue to operate exactly as they do today. Rather, the goal is to stop the island’s nightlife sector from expanding any further. The Ibiza Council has decided that the island already has enough entertainment venues, and that the focus should now be on maintaining the current balance rather than allowing more growth.
If the plan is approved, no new major nightclub licenses would be issued in the coming years. The measure is part of a much broader effort by the Council to manage the mounting tourism pressure that the island faces and to preserve Ibiza’s current structural and cultural identity — an identity that many long-term residents feel has been eroded by unchecked expansion.
The move arrives at a moment of intense debate about the direction of Ibiza’s nightlife — from the consolidation of ownership across the biggest clubs, to concerns about the disappearance of smaller, independent spaces that used to define the island.
