Carl Cox has contributed unreleased music to a new film set in the '90s Northern Irish rave scene, and the project is already drawing Trainspotting comparisons. Skintown, directed by Kieron J. Walsh, premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this past weekend. Notably, the film adapts Ciarán McMenamin's 2018 novel of the same name.

The story follows characters played by Jack Rowan and Chris Walley as they try to escape their small hometown of Enniskillen, nicknamed Skintown, by selling stolen MDMA during the 1994 IRA ceasefire. Derry Girls’ Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Hope Ikpoku Jr. also star. Meanwhile, the film’s key set-piece is a rave and beach afterparty, and Carl Cox is due to appear on screen in that sequence.

Alongside unreleased music from Cox, the soundtrack features The Prodigy, Elastica, Happy Mondays and Jeff Mills. In turn, that lineup pulls the film’s era into sharp focus. “This isn’t necessarily a film about the Troubles,” Rowan told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s actually just a film about people just getting on with their lives… I would just hope people enjoy it, appreciate it, and have as much fun watching it as we did filming it.”

The Skintown contribution stacks another film credit onto a busy chapter for Carl Cox. Recently, he contributed three tracks to Andy Serkis’s animated adaptation of Animal Farm. Beyond that, he continues his UNVRS Ibiza Sunday residency, which just hosted a Robbie Williams live cameo during Miss Monique‘s set.

More on Skintown is available via Edinburgh International Film Festival.
