Ibiza is weighing a major shift in how it handles nightlife growth. Island authorities have proposed an island-wide ban on new club and venue licenses as part of a new Tourism Areas Intervention Plan (PIAT). The proposal is set for approval in the coming weeks and will take effect in 2027, once the current tourism regulatory framework expires at the end of 2026.
The measure formalises a policy that already exists in practice across many of the island’s nightlife districts. Freezes on new venue licenses have been in place informally for years in areas like Playa d’en Bossa and Sant Antoni, but the new PIAT would extend that framework across all of Ibiza. It essentially caps the current club count at what already exists.
The plan lands in a moment where Ibiza’s capacity is under intense scrutiny. Recent seasons have delivered record-breaking mega-club openings, including UNVRS in Playa d’en Bossa, alongside the ongoing operations of Ushuaïa, Hï Ibiza, Pacha, Amnesia, and DC-10. Local government has increasingly focused on managing tourism impact rather than expanding capacity, with residents pushing back on overtourism, water shortages, and infrastructure pressure.
If approved, the ban would mean any new nightlife proposal on the island effectively becomes a non-starter through 2027 and beyond.
