Jamiroquai are marking 30 years of one of the most iconic music videos in pop history. On this day in 1996, Jay Kay and co. released 'Virtual Insanity', the game-changing single from the group's third album 'Travelling Without Moving'. Notably, the song and its illusion-driven Jonathan Glazer-directed video went on to reshape 90s pop culture at large.

“It’s a crazy world we’re livin’ in… even still 30 years later,” Jamiroquai wrote to mark the milestone. “Happy birthday to Virtual Insanity.” The lyric still lands. The video, in which Jay Kay appears to slide across the floor while the room shifts around him, remains a study in optical illusion and choreography. Consequently, it swept the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, taking Video of the Year, Breakthrough Video and Best Cinematography.

Musically, ‘Virtual Insanity’ fused jazz-funk, acid jazz and futurist pop into a sound that has aged remarkably well. Meanwhile, the lyric captured deep-90s anxiety about technology’s grip on modern life, an angle that reads sharper than ever in 2026. Crucially, few singles built out that mid-90s crossover between club music, sample-heavy pop and MTV supremacy quite like this one.

The 30-year moment also lands in a busy anniversary chapter for the group. Recently, Jamiroquai announced a limited transparent-vinyl reissue of ‘Virtual Insanity’ to mark the milestone. Beyond that, the band has kept the track alive across their global festival returns, cementing its status as a modern standard.
