MySpace is coming back. The Vanderhook brothers, Chris and Tim, have officially confirmed plans to relaunch the iconic 2000s social network. Additionally, they told Mashable they are "waiting for the right time" to pull the trigger.
For anyone who grew up on the platform, this is proper nostalgia territory. Notably, MySpace defined online music discovery in the mid-2000s. Bands built entire fanbases on the site. Furthermore, the “Top 8” friends ranking became a whole cultural phenomenon.
The Vanderhooks’ company Specific Media, now part of Viant Technology, has owned MySpace since 2011. Meanwhile, the relaunch will lean into the nostalgia rather than compete with modern algorithm-driven feeds. Original co-founder Chris DeWolfe framed it directly, arguing that “algorithms have a lot to do with the addictive nature of social media.” Additionally, DeWolfe sees room for a non-algorithmic alternative.
One name will not return. Notably, original co-founder Tom Anderson, remembered by an entire generation as “Myspace Tom” and the automatic first friend on every account, is not part of the relaunch.
Ultimately, no timeline has been shared. Furthermore, no visual mockups of the new platform have surfaced. Beyond that, the news alone triggered a wave of nostalgia across dance music circles, where MySpace played a genuinely huge role in early careers for artists including deadmau5, Skrillex and countless underground producers.
