Skrillex and MPH have finally released their long-teased collaboration 'Mirage', via DisOrder and Capitol Records. Fans have been waiting on the track ever since MPH first teased it at EDC Las Vegas in May. Now, the wait is over. The record is streaming worldwide.
‘Mirage’ samples Red Rat‘s early-2000s Jamaican dancefloor classic ‘ShellyAnn’. It sits at the heart of a saucer-eyed, delirium-verging drop. Driving drums, sputtering bass and warped vocal chops tangle with beaming chords and a bouncing synth line. Meanwhile, the pairing between MPH‘s UK Garage instinct and Skrillex‘s sound-design chaos gives the track a distinct identity.
Notably, the two producers recorded ‘Mirage’ in a single afternoon. They were messing around with no real plan. “Skrillex would do some bits and pass the laptop to me,” MPH said. “I’d do some bits and, pretty soon, we’d married our sounds together.” As a result, the track feels loose and instinctive rather than over-engineered.
MPH now sits at the bleeding edge of UK Garage and bassline’s global revival. He has played Coachella, Glastonbury and Parklife this year. His shimmering remix of Calvin Harris‘s ‘I’m Not Alone’ has become a modern classic. Beyond that, his USB drops on sets from Skrillex, Fred again.., Chris Lake, Disclosure, Peggy Gou and Sammy Virji tell the same story.
Following a busy festival summer, MPH heads into his biggest headline run to date. The tour opens September 19 at Copenhagen’s Pumpehuset. It kicks off North America October 2 at REALM in Portland. Finally, it wraps November 28 at Knockdown Center in New York. Meanwhile, Skrillex continues his own headline chapter, including two upcoming nights at Chicago’s Navy Pier.
