Maceo Plex makes Rekids debut with new three-track ‘Monster’ EP: Listen

The EP opens with ‘Flute Jam’, a muscular, progressive cut with broken beats and subtle chords lighting up the top end. Drifting vocals and widescreen synths add scale to what feels like an intergalactic journey, while textured bass brings the weight. The title track ‘Baby Monster’ then features vocals from Baby Monsta, refracted through a full-bodied electro-techno fusion, with chords dancing over fizzing bass and future-facing sound design giving the whole thing an outer-space atmosphere.

Closer ‘Cold Flow’ is a prickly breakbeat cut with dehumanised, trap-style vocals and precision-engineered groove work. It rounds off a cinematic sound palette that pushes breaks, techno and electro into new territory while keeping a soulful, melancholic core intact. Across three tracks, the EP works as a proper snapshot of Maceo Plex at the peak of his current run.

Active since the 90s, Maceo Plex has long been operating in his own musical world, where electro, techno and house fuse into something futuristic and fresh. Three decades in, he continues to shape the underground both as a DJ and producer and as the head of his own influential imprints. Earlier this year he dropped the dark 2-step sounds of his ‘The Plan EP’ via Ellum Audio, which also featured Baby Monsta. On the label side, Rekids was founded in 2006 by Radio Slave and expanded with the techno-focused Rekids Special Projects in 2017, before adding its latest sublabel REK’D in 2024. With Matt Edwards as sole A&R, Rekids continues to champion emerging and established artists alike, remaining a trusted home for house and related sounds, with recent releases from DJ Minx, Butch and Tal Fussman.
