After spending several years developing independently, the Dutch trio explain that they “found themselves missing something particular to Noisia: the exchange of ideas between them, and the feedback loop that begins when their music meets a crowd.” There are new ideas and works-in-progress rather than finished tracks or a fully mapped-out future — and the plan is to test those in the live environment first.
On September 17, 2019, the trio publicly announced the end of Noisia. The COVID-19 pandemic subsequently prolonged the farewell tour, but as the release puts it, “announcing the decision had already removed something important: Noisia no longer had to keep finding a way to continue.” The years that followed gave each member space to develop creative lives outside the trio — and those projects are not being paused for Noisia; they’ll continue alongside it.
Roos has continued developing Sleepnet, launched Ring Noord with Former, and worked across projects including Body Ocean, production, scoring and audio technology. De Vlieger has expanded his work as Thys through collaborations with Amon Tobin, composing for film and contemporary dance, and Iris van Herpen’s Paris Haute Couture show, plus writing for the VIER collective. Van Sonderen has continued with Zonderling, alongside writing and production work across house, melodic techno, pop and hip hop under his producer name NSR.
“What do I want to do? Something I can’t do on my own,” van Sonderen says. “Getting a rough idea from the guys and letting my own ideas loose on it. That already feels exciting again. Maybe exactly because it doesn’t have to feel exciting.”
Roos traces that shift in perspective back to the farewell itself: “For me, doing the farewell tour actually planted the seed of the idea that Noisia can be what we want it to be, not what we think it has to be. When the subject surfaced again, it felt much lighter and surprisingly fun to talk about. Feeling the others’ excitement about it is what really fuelled that for me.”
For de Vlieger, Noisia has shifted from being his “main thing” to “by far the most important thing from my musical past”, and he now describes the trio as “an unknown future prospect again.” “What I’m most excited about is to see what the relationship, what the meeting of minds, can bring creatively again,” he adds. “It’s really exciting to redefine this relationship and this friendship on new terms that align with who we are and who we want to be.”
Roos describes the project today as “a realm of possibility. Noisia is in motion again. We don’t know where it’ll lead. But the energy is moving somewhere.”
The first step is deliberately close to home
The Noisia return begins on home ground. Melkweg holds a particular place in Noisia’s history, having hosted the final edition of Noisia Invites in Amsterdam during the farewell period. On December 4, the trio return to the venue to begin this next phase. Further shows are planned, with details to follow in due course.
The documentary
A week before today’s announcement, Noisia reappeared publicly — though not in the form many might have expected. Directed by filmmaker Farhad Khodadadzade, Vlucht, een Noisia documentaire offers a deadpan, metaphorical look at the human beings behind Noisia in 2020, their individual reflections on their respective pasts and futures, and their birdwatching practices. Deliberately open-ended, the film arrived without an explanation of why Noisia had resurfaced, or what, if anything, was supposed to follow. Today provides part of the answer.
