On this exact day in 1981, the world’s first 24 hour music video channel began to air to our television sets; and the rest was history.
At 12:01am on August 1, that now unbelievably famous track by The Buggles was the first music video to be broadcast – ironically named: Video Killed The Radio Star. Thanks to MTV, the track burst into the US singles chart where it had not made a dent when released 2 years earlier.
Since then, there have been thousands of artists who have directly and indirectly benefited from the access to the main stream that MTV have provided; all of whom should be extremely thankful on this day.
Indeed, electronic and dance music is experiencing something of a boom at the moment, a boom which is being partially fuelled by MTV. Every time I switch on to the channel I need not wait long before “The Hum” by Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike is shown, amongst a whole host of other artists representing the genre from Disclosure to Major Lazer. Dance music has never been so accessible; something that MTV can take credit for.
In celebration of MTV’s 34th birthday, we have decided to compile some of our 34 favourite dance music videos since 1981. Enjoy!
