New Documentary ‘What We Started’ Tackles Dance Music

Film company Bert Marcus Productions has produced a new EDM documentary titled ‘What We Started’. The documentary weaves through the dichotomous stories of dance music’s underground beginnings to its present-day commercial success as EDM. To properly understand the industry from all angles, prominent artists such as Steve Angello, Tiesto, Afrojack, David Guetta, Usher, Ed SheeranPaul Oakenfold, and Seth Troxler all feature in the film.

Bert Marcus, who is responsible for works such as Teenage Paparazzo and How to Make Money Selling Drugs and Champs, has co-written, produced & directed ‘What We Started’ alongside Cyrus Saidi. Despite having access to a plethora of DJs to feature in the film, Marcus explained the reasoning behind his choice to make Martin Garrix and Carl Cox the centre of the film.

“It was important for us to choose two characters that fully represent the birth of the music and the present of the industry. They were extremely enlightening and gave us unprecedented access.”

In comparison to other genres, EDM is relatively young. House & Disco, being the older genres, have only been in existence since the late 1970’s. Today, EDM is a $7.4b global industry. The documentary aims to dive into the early beginnings of EDM, and look at how & why dance music exploded at such rapid pace.
