Poplar Tree is a 25-year old San Francisco based producer, originally from Hong Kong. Earlier in the year, he released his debut EP ‘Paper Places’, which features a beautiful track ‘Cradle’ with singer Megan McDuffee. The two are back working together on their new single ‘Fairies’.

‘Fairies’ takes an electronic-cinematic approach to telling the story of a man lost in a forest. He encounters a woman and tries to find a way out, and ultimately gets trapped in his own confusion and imagination. The track is driven by Megan McDuffee’s outstanding vocal performance, and the production to go along with it compliments it perfectly, by using an arrangement which is constantly changing and evolving, adding to the sense of movement and storytelling the two artists are going for.

In a recent interview with Dope Cause We Said, Poplar Tree spoke about his biggest inspirations for his EP, saying:

My musical inspirations were Ember Island, Owl City, Emmit Fenn, and Porter Robinson. It took 6 months to finish my EP from lyric writing to mastering, and 2 months for design and release, about 8 months in total.

We can definitely hear those inspirations in his work, from the unique arrangements of the tracks to the little melodic elements which add to the flow and listening experience, Poplar Tree has definitely created a style of music which is unique and pleasant to listen to.

He also spoke about how he first met Megan McDuffe, saying:

I really think the human voice is the most beautiful instrument, and I am so fortunate to have met the awesome people I collaborated with. Megan McDuffee is a rockstar game developer and film music composer who I met on Craigslist, who has been so awesome to work with.
