The Chainsmokers scoop dance award at MTV Video Music Awards (VMA)

The 34th edition of MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) took place August 26, 2019 (Monday) hosted by comedian,Sebastian Maniscalco from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The show was filled with energetic live performances, plenty of motivational award-acceptance speeches and numerous celebrities like Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, J Balvin just to name a few.  The prestigious award show presented by the cable channel MTV, annually honors the best artists, songs, music videos and productions in the industry since 1984.

This year 4,9 million people turned on their televisions and streaming devices from across the globe to be part of the audience of the award show, which is a considerable amount. However, taking into account that in 2014 – just a few years ago – this number was peaking 10.1 million viewers, the statistics actually report a new record of a low rating. Which should not be too surprising in the era of internet where everything is just one click away, while the popularity of the traditional paid cable and satellite services show a downward tendency. On the other hand, according to The Hollywood Reporter, social media engagement and online video views for the show increased by 85 percent.

Even though EDM is only sparsely represented in the event, there is a category dedicated to Dance music. This year the nominations were the following:

BEST DANCE

The Chainsmokers ft. Bebe Rexha – “Call You Mine” — WINNER

Clean Bandit ft. Demi Lovato – “Solo”

DJ Snake ft. Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B – “Taki Taki”

David Guetta, Bebe Rexha & J Balvin – “Say My Name”

Marshmello & Bastille – “Happier”

Silk City & Dua Lipa – “Electricity”
