The French music company, Believe/Believe Music, TuneCore’s parent company is developing an AI-generated music detection Software with 98% accuracy.

According to a Q3 publication by TuneCore’s parent company Believe/Believe Music, AI-generated music detection software is in the development pipeline, with an efficiency of 98%. They have previously stated that they do not want to publish 100% AI-generated music in their systems, but apparently, now this is becoming a reality. Why do they need this in the age of the AI revolution? Why is there so much pressure on publishing companies?

“This was developed internally by our own teams that have expertise in AI and audio recognition.”, said Denis Ladegaillerie, CEO & Founder of Believe.

The beginnings

French-based but global digital music company Believe, formerly Believe Music, has made some interesting announcements in its Q3 report. Not only is it interesting that they have massively increased their revenues by over €184 million compared to their Q3 in 2022, but they have also made some exciting developments in AI technologies. In their Q1 announcement this year, Denis Ladegaillerie, the company’s CEO, said “We do not wish to distribute and we are not to distribute any content that is 100% created by AI”. In this, they meant and included parent company Believe and subsidiary TuneCore.

About the Software

Now, a couple of months and two quarters later, it has been announced that software is in development that can tell with 98% accuracy whether or not the music is AI generated, and with 93% accuracy whether or not it is “deep fake”. This was reported in their statement as an “excellent detection rate”, citing the fact that software already in use in the industry is working with 99.9% accuracy, but those are based on comparing AI-generated and human-generated music. In the Q3 announcement made on 24 October, Ladegaillerie described the technology as “in production right now and functioning”, which is referred to by the “AI Radar” tagline.

What is happening in the music industry?

For those of who follow the music industry and its changes, it is clear that there has been a lot of activity in many aspects in recent months. A very good example of this is that several large streaming services, such as Spotify or Deezer, have entered or will enter shortly into an “artist-centric” model, either independently or by agreement. But there’s also the case of Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican rapper, and singer who went public on a song by FlowGPT artist that went viral on TikTok in which Bad Bunny’s vocals were sampled with AI. Interestingly, Warner Music and Universal Music Group have also been in talks with Google about licensing AI-generated voices. Earlier this year, UMG also submitted a request to several streaming service providers to deny AI companies access to their accounts, adding “We will not hesitate to take steps to protect our rights and those of our artists”.

In conclusion, in light of the above, the music industry has much to prepare for in terms of AI. Apparently, the major labels are not letting up either, so it is understandable that the development of Believe is also software for detecting AI-generated music. At some point, distributors and streaming providers will certainly want to protect themselves from legal lawsuits, with a possible point being the complete exclusion of AI from platforms. Whether this is a good thing in the age of the AI revolution is for all to decide.
