Home Editorials Avicii & Nicky Romero timeless hit ‘I Could Be The One’ turns 11 years old

Eleven years ago, on December 26, 2012, electronic dance music enthusiasts were treated to a groundbreaking collaboration that would shape the landscape of the genre. “I Could Be The One,” a mesmerizing track by Avicii & Nicky Romero, featuring uncredited vocals from Swedish singer Noonie Bao, was released as a digital download in Sweden and the Netherlands. Little did the world know that this track would become an iconic anthem and a timeless representation of the EDM era.

The journey of “I Could Be The One” began with its debut at the Super Glow event in DC Armory, Washington, USA, on November 18, 2011. Initially without a title, the track went through various monikers, eventually settling on “Nicktim,” a clever fusion of the first names of both producers, Nicky and Tim (Avicii’s real name). The instrumental version contained a sample from Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.,” which was later removed in the final release.

A vocal version of the track emerged a year later, premiering on Avicii’s “LE7ELS” podcast on November 4, 2012, and subsequently on Nicky Romero’s “Protocol Radio” a week later. After mastering the track, it was officially named “I Could Be The One (Nicktim),” with Avicii and Nicky Romero credited as the artists.

In 2017, Noonie Bao, the uncredited vocalist and songwriter of the track, shared an interesting tidbit about her collaboration with Avicii. Despite contributing vocals to “I Could Be The One” and another track on Avicii’s 2013 album “True,” Noonie Bao revealed that she hadn’t actually met Avicii until several years later. This revelation adds a layer of mystique to the creative process behind the song, showcasing the interconnected yet sometimes distant nature of collaborative music production.

Global Chart Domination

“I Could Be The One” made its mark on the music charts, peaking at number three on the Swedish Singles Chart. Internationally, it achieved even greater success, reaching number one in Hungary and the United Kingdom. The single also secured positions within the top 10 in various countries, including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and the Republic of Ireland.

The United Kingdom, in particular, witnessed the song’s triumph as it entered the UK Singles Chart at number one on February 17, 2013, for the week ending on February 23, 2013. This accomplishment marked the first chart-topping single for both Avicii and Nicky Romero in the UK. Additionally, on the UK Dance Chart, “I Could Be The One” debuted at number one, surpassing Baauer’s “Harlem Shake,” which entered the chart at number three.

Legacy and Impact

“I Could Be The One” remains a testament to the prowess of Avicii and Nicky Romero as visionary producers and collaborators. The track’s infectious melody, combined with Noonie Bao’s emotive vocals, captured the hearts of music lovers worldwide, solidifying its place in the EDM hall of fame.

As we celebrate the 11th anniversary of “I Could Be The One,” it serves as a reminder of the talent and innovation that Avicii brought to the electronic music scene. Tragically, Avicii’s life was cut short in 2018, but his music continues to resonate with fans, ensuring that his legacy endures through timeless creations like “I Could Be The One.” This anniversary invites us to revisit the track, relive the euphoria it brought, and appreciate the enduring impact it has had on the world of electronic dance music.
