The last two years have seen James Hype rise through the ranks of the electronic music landscape and become a household name, performing on stages worldwide. The team at We Rave You had a chance to sit down with the English DJ to pick his brain on his career, the art of DJing, and his thoughts on cell phones at events.

Since James Hype released Ferrari at the beginning of 2022, he has been a staple of radio and festival line-ups, with the single surpassing half a billion streams on Spotify alone. Since then, he has continued to release incredible singles and grow his Stereohype brand as he continues to entertain a growing legion of fans worldwide. Sitting down with the team at We Rave You, he dives into several topics, such as the art of DJing, the excitement of producing new music, and of course the ever-present question of fans’ use of cell phones to film events.

Opening up this exclusive interview, James Hype discusses his excitement and awe of working with Kim Petras, revealing that she was able to knock out her vocals in a mere 20 minutes, leaving the artists with a whole day blocked off and no work to do. Diving deeper into the track Drums, Hype goes on to reveal that he had built the track over four years ago, using a Justin Timberlake soundtrack as part of the foundation, but never truly believing he would be able to clear it with the pop star (spoiler: Timberlake cleared the sample).

In the short interview, Hype also discusses his pre-fame days as a DJ and truly believes he has surpassed the 10,000-hour mark behind the decks, a milestone that has helped him impress fellow DJs in b2b settings. He specifically talks about his time on stage with MEDUZA and the excitement both artists found in being able to play off each other and curate a set that was different from anything fans had ever heard before.

Closing out the interview, James Hype talks about fans’ use of cell phones for filming, and how he is experimenting with ‘phone-free’ events. Hype gives great insights into the cell phone debate, and the industry in general. Be sure to watch the full interview below.
