Throughout history, art and music have been a constant source of inspiration and a defining metric of civilizations. New French legislation has been approved to honor the importance of the nightclub culture within the country.

When discussing French artists’ contribution to the electronic music culture, it is impossible to ignore the massive impact left by the likes of countrymen Daft Punk, Justice, and DJ Snake to name a few. Of course, these artists, and many more, couldn’t have thrived without a functioning landscape and platform for them to deliver their art to the massive. Before social media and viral posts amounted to fame, it was the country’s nightclub scene that helped to determine which acts would rise above the rest to garner success and influence the culture. New legislation is now being set in motion to give these spaces the proper respect and commendation they deserve for their role in shaping culture.

Thanks to diligent work from groups such as Culture Nuit, which is a union of French nightclubs that look to support the culture and include key venues such as Rex Club and Le Badaboum, was well received by French officials. The Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, stated that ‘It’s important to recognise clubs and discotheques as popular cultural actors.’ This new legislation will work to improve the operating conditions of nightclubs within France. Much like similar legislation that recently passed in Berlin, this represents a massive win for nightclub culture and a chance to further build and expand offerings in the future.
