Held in Louisville, Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby is America’s most beloved equestrian event with millions of people across the world tuning into the event each year. This year’s event signifies the 150th Kentucky Derby race to go down in history, in which the highly anticipated event welcomes crowds of more than 150,000 people.

The event itself is seen as one of the most glamorous sporting events in the US, with the likes of British royalty, celebrities and many high rollers walking down the event’s red carpet and attending the galas that are held across the weekend in celebration of the big race. This year, we can expect to see no less with visitors donning their finest attire, from head turning dresses and fine matching hats, to polished and bright coloured blazers. Just don’t be the person turning up in jeans and converses, no matter where in the event you’re seated.

For those that are not attending the event this year, there’s still plenty of ways to get involved in the excitement of the Kentucky Derby, from placing your Kentucky Derby odds online to see if you could be in with the chance of winning big, to hosting a Kentucky Derby party at home and invited over all your friends and family.

If you’re thinking of throwing a Kentucky Derby party, there’s so many exciting things to plan, from what music you will play, to the theme of the party, the cocktails and food you’ll serve, and what the dress code will be. It may seem overwhelming but don’t worry as below we’ve got you covered with what themes to go with and what the best songs are to include on your Kentucky Derby playlist.

Kentucky Derby party themes

The Kentucky Derby is one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year in the US, in which people go big when they host Kentucky Derby parties. While the event is a classy one, there’s nothing stopping you from hosting a more casual bbq to enjoy the event with family and friends in a less pressured environment too.

Whether you’re planning on going all out or keeping it casual with the hot dog buns and flip flops, below we’ve listed some of the most popular Kentucky Derby party themes to suit every party style.

High class 1920’s – There’s something about the glamor of the 1920’s that is so authentic and exciting. Whether it has a Gatsby theme with jazz music, dancing and art decor, or a more authentic 1920’s feel with games like rummy and spades in the true betting style of the event, there’s no right or wrong way to hold your party.

Causal BBQ – If glitz and glamor isn’t really your scene, there’s nothing wrong with hosting a classic bbq party. Don’t forget to get out the classic garden games like corn hole and ring toss, as well as a blow up pool if you’re lucky enough to be in the southern sun this time of year. While you don’t need to include glamor, why not include a classic cocktail like a fresh mint julep to keep in theme with the event.

Red carpet theme – There are many celebrities that attend the Kentucky Derby each year, from NFL stars, to celebrity chefs and even British royalty. Why not get in on the excitement by rolling out your own red carpet and giving guests the real VIP treatment.

Creating a hit playlist

The type of playlist you create of course depends on the type of party you are hosting. Let’s start with some of the classics that should be included on every Kentucky Derby playlist.

My Old Kentucky Home – Stephen Foster

Covered by many artists since, including Johnny Cash, My Old Kentucky Home is a controversial song today that some argue is not appropriate to be played anymore. It’s important to bear this in mind, however it is still widely accepted as a Kentucky Derby classic that evokes a sense of patriotism in many Kentuckians.

Run for the Roses – Dan Fogelberg

This track is great for both casual and glamorous parties and is a Kentucky Derby classic. The song evokes feelings of excitement and celebration for the main event and is a celebration of all the risks and rewards life has to offer.

Beautiful Dreamer – Stephen Foster

As another classic by Stephen Foster, Beautiful Dreamer is a song that’s ideal for the slower and more reflective moments and is best saved for towards the end of your playlist when the event is winding down.

All my Ex’s Live in Texas – George Strait

This song is perfectly suited for the more casual bbq parties and adds a little bit of country to the vibe. Though it’s not Kentucky specific, it’s a great one for celebrating deep southern roots and American culture.

Overall, the Kentucky Derby brings so much excitement and celebration as the event unfolds. Whether you’re lucky enough to be attending the event itself in Louisville, or you’re hosting your own Kentucky Derby celebration, music is always a big part of the celebrations and is close to all Americans’ hearts.
