Martin Garrix iconic track “Animals” celebrates its 11th anniversary, marking its release on June 17, 2013. The Dutch DJ and producer launched the track as a digital download on iTunes, and it quickly became a staple within the EDM culture. “Animals” catapulted Garrix into the spotlight, making him the youngest producer to have a song reach number one on Beatport. The track not only topped electronic music charts but also found success on mainstream charts, reaching number one in the UK, Switzerland, and Belgium. In the US, it climbed to number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and secured the top spot on the Dance chart.

Before its official release, “Animals” generated significant buzz. Spinnin’ Records released a teaser clip online, sparking speculation about the track’s creator. Various artists like Hardwell, GTA, Sidney Samson, and Bassjackers were rumored to be behind the track before Garrix‘s identity was revealed. Garrix later shared that the melody originated from an unreleased track he composed two years earlier, while the minimalist rhythmic sound was inspired by Busta Rhymes’ “What It Is”. The song features minimal vocals, with the phrase “We’re the fucking animals” spoken by a friend of Garrix.

Global Success

Billboard ranked “Animals” as Martin Garrix second-best song in 2016, behind “In the Name of Love”. The review praised the track for ushering in a new dance era and establishing the then-17-year-old Garrix as a leading figure in the new wave of EDM. Described as “big, brash, and infectious,” the song remains a festival anthem and continues to resonate with audiences.

“Animals” initially gained traction at major electronic music festivals such as Ultra Korea, Tomorrowland, and Ultra Music Festival. The track then topped Beatport‘s chart and climbed dance and mainstream charts across Europe. In November 2013, it debuted at number one on the UK’s Official Singles Chart, surpassing singles from Lily Allen and Ellie Goulding. In the US, “Animals” became the first instrumental track to reach the Billboard Hot 100‘s top 40 since Kenny G‘s “Auld Lang Syne” in 1999. As of June 2020, the song’s music video has amassed over 1.5 billion views on YouTube.

Various media outlets featured “Animals.” Madden NFL 25 used it in a commercial, while games like Asphalt 8: Airborne and FIFA Online 3 included its instrumental version. Additionally, “Animals” was part of Just Dance 2016 with an extreme routine. In April 2014, Dior used the track in an advertisement for their lipstick and lipgloss range.

Celebrating its 11th anniversary, “Animals” continues to influence the EDM scene and remains a defining track in Martin Garrix‘s career. Its widespread appeal and significant chart success have solidified its place in electronic music history.
