Crazy Town singer Shifty Shellshock dies of drug overdose

Amidst the rise of nu-metal and rap rock in the 1990s, Crazy Town broke through to the mainstream on the strength of their debut album and their single Butterfly. Built upon the foundation of Pretty Little Ditty from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the single matched the funk and aggression of the era perfectly. While the group would never attain that level of success again, they firmly cemented their role in the cultural zeitgeist with Butterfly gaining almost half a billion streams via Spotify. The group finds themselves in the spotlight once again with the tragic passing of singer Shifty Shellshock earlier this week. At just 49, the news sent shockwaves through the music industry as family, friends, and fans remembered the late vocalist.

While the public mourned the passing of Shifty, details of his death wouldn’t emerge until days later. The news came from Crazy Town’s manager, Howie Hubberman, who shared that the singer died from an accidental overdose. Hubberman stated, “Seth Binzer, after struggling with addiction and Crazy Town’s rapid success with ‘Butterfly,’ never was able to reach out on a more successful level to deal with his addictions.” He continued on to say, “The cause of death was a combination of prescription drugs and street purchased drugs. Shifty was a friend and really wanted to get himself fixed — unfortunately no one had the exact tools to do this.” Shifty Shellshock had been public with his bouts with addiction, previously appearing on several seasons of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.
