KSHMR started Dharma Worldwide record label to release music with a world vibe, and his first EP release called Materia is now available.
Lead single ‘Festival of Lights‘ explores Indian sounds, with Hindi vocals hovering above KSHMR’s signature booming, big room beats. As previously explained, KSHMR was inspired to craft the single and the EP by listening to a demo submission from Dutch rising act Maurice West.
Three additional tracks join ‘Lights‘ on the extended play, each one a creative synthesis of big room and Indian music, which boldly defeats any criticism of the genre being passé or derivative of the world music that Diplo creates, for example.
‘Kolkata‘ is a tribute to one of India’s megacities and features artists JDG and Mariana Bo. The EP’s standout track is definitely ‘The Serpent‘ a witty take on snake-charmer music but with heavy, grinding synths by way of guest collaborator Snails, with almost a touch of hardstyle.
A track with No Mondays closes out the EP: ‘Divination‘ has a beautiful melody, reminiscent of Buddha Bar releases but ready for the Ibiza of tomorrow. It’s joyful in all the right ways.
