With five years and a global pandemic having come and (sorta) gone, fans are growing impatient with new music from The xx. The trio have now confirmed that they are in the studio working on the follow-up to 2017’s I See You.

The trio of The xx, consisting of producer Jamie XX, Oliver Sims on vocals and bass, and Romy on vocals and guitar, have been staples of the indie/ electronica scene ever since their stunning self-titled debut back in 1999. Since then, the trio has continued to grow and achieve larger portions of success. Despite their global popularity, the group has been dormant since shortly after its 2017 third album, I See You. Since then, Jamie XX has continued to produce music and perform, while Oliver Sims and Romy continue to create and provide vocals for various electronic artists. For Romy, she even teamed up with Fred Again.. for the single Strong which appeared on her 2023 solo album, Mid Air.

While the constant output certainly helps make up for the extended delay in new xx music, fans are certainly ready for the trio to come back together, and the group appears to feel the same way:

“Yeah it’s fun, it’s quite different being in the studio with The xx…I think Oliver [Sim] and Jamie [xx] and I have all tried new things and learned a lot from different projects and I think that’s quite healthy to be like, ‘What have you learned? What should we do now?’ And I think it’s quite wide open and it’s exciting to be starting again in a way. But we’ve started making some music and I’m really excited about it…It’s still pretty early [but] I still think you’ll be able to tell it’s us but I think we’re excited to move it on and keep it feeling fresh.”

Although the group is still in the early phases of recording, it is a joy for fans to know that the process has begun. With no timeline for a release, there is no guarantee the album will arrive in 2024, but it sounds the Romy, Oliver, and Jamie are focused on the task at hand.
