UK grassroots music scene faces devastation as 125 venues shut down

Home Featured UK grassroots music scene faces devastation as 125 venues shut down

2023 was a catastrophic year for UK music, with a record 125 grassroots venues closing their doors for good. This alarming figure, revealed by Music Venue Trust (MVT), paints a dark picture of a vital sector struggling for survival.

The impact of these closures is far-reaching. Over 4,000 jobs vanished due to the shutdowns, and 14,500 music events were left in limbo, missing a stage to call home. For aspiring musicians, the loss is even more poignant: a staggering 193,230 performance opportunities evaporated into thin air.

This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the cultural fabric of the UK being ripped apart. Iconic venues like Bath’s Moles, where giants like Oasis and Radiohead cut their teeth, succumbed to the harsh realities of rising costs and crippling rent.

“The cost of living crisis has spoiled the grassroots music sector,” Moles announced in a heartbreaking statement. “Huge rent rates, along with massively increased costs on everything from utilities to stock, are all factors.” But there’s still hope. Initiatives like Ticketmaster’s October campaign, where fans could donate to MVT during checkout, offered a glimmer of light. MVT CEO Mark Davyd, however, emphasises the need for “radical intervention.”

“These small, independent spaces are now closing at the rate of one per week,” he warned. “Around 93% have private landlords with interests often clashing with their passion for music.”

MVT is fighting back. They’re buying venues from private landlords, acting as benevolent guardians to keep the music alive. They’re the National Trust for music venues, protecting the spaces where dreams take flight. The UK grassroots music scene needs our support. Donate to MVT, attend local gigs, and let your voice be heard. We must protect the heart of music before it beats its last note.

Remember, every closed venue is not just a lost building; it’s a lost chance for a future star, a stifled community, and a piece of our cultural soul. Let’s rewrite the narrative of 2024 and keep the music playing.
