Jeff Mills, renowned in the electronic music world spoke with Music Radar ahead of his CRSSD Festival appearance, reflecting on his career and musical gear preferences. Mills, a pioneer in Detroit’s electronic scene, has continually pushed boundaries. He values simplicity in instruments, reminiscent of iconic Roland gear like the 303, which pushed creativity through limitations. While modern equipment offers versatility, Mills finds inspiration in older gear.

Jeff Mills is a globally recognized figure in the electronic music scene. Recently discussing his enduring influence and gear preferences with Music Radar ahead of his appearance at the CRSSD Festival. From his groundbreaking days with Underground Resistance in Detroit to establishing his Axis imprint earlier in the 90’s, Jeff Mills has become an icon charting his path into techno music. Now, with Tomorrow Comes the Harvest, a 3-piece of electro, jazz and afropunk, Mills continues push his ever-evolving sound forward.

Going deeper into his perferences for vintage gear such as the Roland 303, Mills praises the simplicity, which fostered creativity through limitation. While modern equipment offers unlimited possibilities, Mills has shared he enjoys the capabilities of older instruments. Sharing his thoughts, Mills states:

“Instrument manufacturers should strive to create gear that, like the 303, excels at one thing brilliantly. Older machines encouraged creativity through their limitations, whereas modern equipment can be overwhelming with endless options. I still prefer working with older gear, finding new ways to make them sound unique.”
