Sennheiser HD 620S Headphones: First Look

Sennheiser just released a new set of high-end headphones called the HD 620S. These closed-back headphones are designed for private listening at home, work, or on-the-go without outside noise getting in. But they also provide an impressively wide and immersive soundstage that you’d normally only get with open-back headphones.

What Makes Them Special?

The HD 620S uses custom 42mm drivers made in Sennheiser’s Irish factory. These drivers produce a similar sound like Sennheiser’s acclaimed open-back 600 series headphones. But the 620S tuning gives the sound an extra sense of airiness and space. Despite being closed-back, Senheiser claims the 620S have excellent bass that goes deep while still being tight and articulate. The drivers can also reproduce fast transients and decaying instrument sounds with great clarity across all frequencies. This level of detail retrieval makes them great for audiophiles, but also for gaming where you want to hear every footstep and gunshot.

Comfortable Yet Durable Design

The 620S have the same iconic design as the open 600 series, with a metal headband and earcups that keep them comfortable for long listening sessions. The angled drivers are positioned to recreate the wide, speaker-like soundstage of open-backs. A steel plate behind the drivers helps isolate the interior acoustics for purer sound. Despite being sealed, the 620S avoid the boxy, claustrophobic sound that plagues many closed headphones.

The metal construction makes the 620S extremely durable too. The detachable cable uses a locking connector and Sennheiser will offer optional balanced cables. A carrying pouch is included as well.

Open-back headphones are preferred by audiophiles for their open, natural sound. But they leak noise both ways, disturbing others around you and letting in outside noise. Closed-back headphones isolate you from environmental distractions and prevent audio leakage. The 620S aim to provide open-back sound quality in a closed, isolating design for professional and private listening.
