Home Tech Avantone Pro Brings Back Classic ‘White Cone’ Studio Monitors

Avantone Pro has re-released updated versions of their popular CLA-10 studio monitor speakers.

These speakers are modeled after an iconic “white cone” monitor that has been used in top recording studios for over 45 years. The original “white cone” monitors are famous for their accurate and unforgiving sound that lets audio engineers clearly hear issues in their mixes, especially with vocals. If a mix sounds great on those monitors, it will translate well to other speakers too.

The new CLA-10 Active and CLA-10 Passive keep the signature sound of the vintage originals but add some modern upgrades. Both models use custom-designed drivers to precisely match the tone and performance of the old “white cone” speakers. The CLA-10 Active is a powered (active) monitor with built-in amplifiers. It has a special “Variable Tissue Paper Control” knob that lets you slightly reduce the high frequencies, replicating the old trick of putting tissue paper over the tweeters.

The CLA-10 Passive is an unpowered (passive) version that needs to be connected to a separate amplifier. It has a switch to reduce the high frequencies by 2dB for that vintage tissue-covered sound. With their faithful recreation of the revered “white cone” monitors plus added modern flexibility, the new CLA-10 models aim to be ideal mixing references for engineers and producers.

The CLA-10 Active will cost $999 per pair, while the CLA-10 Passive will be $699 per pair. Both are expected to ship worldwide in early July 2024. For further information, please visit the dedicated CLA-Active and CLA-10 Passive webpages here:
