As the end of the decade nearly approaches, major music streaming platforms like Spotify and Soundcloud have come out with personalized data-driven “top tracks of the year” playlists and other streaming history projects. Spotify easily struck users with their exclusive “My Decade Wrapped” feature, revealing users’ listening history from the past ten years. But let’s not forget one of the very first online streaming platforms us music lovers ever got free access to, the legendary Youtube. To close out 2019 with a bang, YouTube has disclosed its top 40 most played tracks of all time and it’s incredible to see how much music has evolved over the years.

While the Youtube statistical top 40 tracks of all time reveal aren’t personalized to individual users, its overall data sure speaks volumes. Each track’s streaming numbers range from the high millions to even billions of streams worldwide, demonstrating the power of music through history. From classics from the 80’s like Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Sweet Child Of Mine’ to the later 2000’s top-of-the-charts favourites like ‘Uptown Funk’ by Mark Ronson and the #1 spot winner ‘Despacito’ by Luis Fonsi, the results display a wide array of music genres as the list goes on.

Electronic dance music is still a pretty young genre, but this legendary list includes some of the most widely recognized dance-infused catchy tunes such as ‘Barbie Girl’ by Acqua, ‘Crazy Frog’ by Axel F, and Korean pop/electro-house sensation ‘Gangnam Style’. Music is timeless, and these are all  songs that will surely keep on being streamed around the globe for many more years to come.
