When Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo decided to hang up their helmets and retire from Daft Punk, the world was saddened and stunned, but the duo have opened the vaults in years since, giving fans an in-depth look at the group like never before. Part of the duo’s latest archival release has come in the form of Memory Tapes, an online video catalog diving into the group’s past.

The release of Memory Tapes, episode 6 saw the iconic Pharrell Williams reflecting back on his relationship with Daft Punk as well as the creation process for the tracks Lose Yourself To Dance and the timeless single, Get Lucky. In the episode, Williams looks back on how he first met the robots when he was given the opportunity to remix Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and how their initial meeting revealed how they both experienced and created music with such passion and vigor. Further, Pharrell Williams reveals how he believed that he was writing Get Lucky for another vocalist, having just met them in the studio and then getting put through the rigors of the recording process with Daft Punk overseeing the session.

A whole year would pass before Pharrell would return to the studio with Daft Punk when they finally played the tracks for the vocalist, music that he had forgotten over the preceding 365 days. In the short video, archival footage is revealed from the moment that Williams first hears it and his excitement is palpable in both his expression and his response:

Wow, that’s my only word—wow,” Williams said. “This must be one of the best birthdays man… doing your record and just putting out crazy material. That’s amazing. I’m so honored and humbled to be a part of that.

Even years later, the joy and pride that Pharrell expresses in regard to his work with Daft Punk continues to resonate with the acclaimed producer and songwriter. It is an exciting and powerful watch, and the clip can be viewed below.
