Fans, artists, and industry insiders have long grown accustomed to the changing styles and sounds of the popular creators of each generation and the cultural shifts that help the industry thrive. The last two-plus decades have seen an even larger shift in the business and access to creation than ever before and the CEO at BandLab has some bold predictions for the future of music.

Ever since the introduction of file-sharing software back in the late 1990s, the traditional mechanisms and processes of the music industry have been going through a large shift. As major labels and artists looked to adapt to new listening models and reform payment methods, other technologies have since arrived that further shifted the role of the creators as well. With the importance of expensive studios and walls of physical equipment being exchanged for home computers, plug-ins, and sample packs, creators have more flexibility and freedom than ever to forge their path.

BandLab CEO Meng Ru Kuok recently discussed the evolving landscape and revealed some exciting and unique predictions. During a recent interview with Music Business Worldwide, Kuok revealed that he believes one billion people will be creating within six years. “This is with the caveat that I also believe the definition of a ‘music creator’ or ‘musician’ will change, just as the definition of a ‘photographer’ has changed with the advent of smartphones. That is to say hopefully we can and will both be right.”

The bold prediction from Kuok makes sense considering the access to new fans and outlets thanks to social media. No longer do artists need to rely upon the mechanisms of a major label and PR team to promote their finished products. Kuok expands upon this concept, noting “Our insights show that these young creators are not looking for isolated software solutions, but a dynamic community that supports their growth and exposure.”

With the success of platforms such as BandLab, as well as evolving technology, Meng Ru Kuok may very well be underestimating that figure.
