The MIDI Association, a nonprofit trade organization committed to advancing and safeguarding MIDI technology, has appointed Tim Carroll, the CEO of Focusrite Group, as its new president. The decision, determined through an election by the association’s executive board, designates Carroll for a two-year term, as announced in a recent press release. The Focusrite Group oversees a diverse range of brands, including the renowned Focusrite, Sonnox, Sequential, Oberheim, and Novation. Carroll’s election is expected to receive widespread approval from both the Association membership and the broader industry.

In his role as president, Tim Carroll aims to build upon the legacy of Dave Smith, the founder of Sequential and a pivotal figure in MIDI’s inception, who introduced the first synthesizer with a MIDI port over five decades ago. The Association emphasizes Carroll’s commitment to steering the organization through this critical juncture, especially as MIDI has transitioned from 1.0 to 2.0 in recent years. Beyond his responsibilities in overseeing MIDI for manufacturers and developers, Carroll will also play a strategic role in the Association’s philanthropic endeavors, including MIDI innovation, music education, and music/wellness.
