Arcadia prepares for their 2024 season as we approach the festival’s August dates. This year, the Arcadia team has opted to replace the fan-loved fiery spider for something in a similar vein that reaches back to one of the organizations founding principals.

Arcadia revealed to fans a new addition to the slew of festival “bio-mechanical creatures” that will be placed in one of the many arenas around the Glastonbury festival. The installation will feature an ex-Royal Navy helicopter that will be retrofitted in what will be known as ‘The Dragonfly‘. The name leaves little to the imagination and fans surely have some small clue as to what the final feature will resemble. The helicopter is being repurposed under the mythos of transforming a “weapon of mass destruction into a unifying symbol”.

What’s even more fascinating is that ‘The Dragonfly’ will function completely off of renewable resources. The refurbished helicopter will be fitted to run off of batteries that are charged off-site by wind and solar energy. The post announcing the line-up for this years festival reinforces this idea of changing towards a future that prospers from renewal and the relationship humans have with technology:

“The Dragonfly, a giant biomechanical creature, will awaken at the heart of an evolved geometric space, exploring ideas around renewal, our relationship with technology and uniting to adapt in a changing climate.”

The new stage has apparently had a lot of work put behind it, as the new fixture is said to be a bigger portion of focus in preparing for the festival. Arcadia co-founders Pip Rush and Bert Cole had this to say on the new piece for the festival:

“We’ve loved the challenge of forging something new as our main Glastonbury installation – it’s been hard to contain the excitement and keep this under wraps.”

Arcadia Glastonbury festival is set to return August 4-6, 2024. Line-ups have already begun to slowly trickle out to the masses and the acts are sure to excite fans. With large names such as Eric Prydz and Fatboy Slim who have built the EDM scene up for decades, to newcomers such as Hedex (who we ranked as having one of the top 99 songs of 2023 with his breakout hit MHITR), it’s a group of acts that will surely enliven the crowds and potentially push festival-goers to think deeper with their relationship to nature and how technology impacts it as well as open fans up to conversations focusing on ‘renewal’.
