Two separate lawsuits have been filed against Suno AI & Udio AI in Massachusetts & New York.

Suno AI & Udio have captured major headlines all across the globe with their AI music-making web app. In the short span since their launch, the two have become one of the best music-making AI softwares available to date. AI apps have been skyrocketing in the past few years and so have the copyright concerns revolving around them. Suno AI & Udio are now under the same radar.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group’s UMG Recordings, and Warner Records filed lawsuits over the unsolicited use of copyrighted music to train Suno AI’s models. They filed the lawsuit against Suno in the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts and filed the lawsuit against Udio in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. The lawsuit seeks damages worth $150,000 for each infringed work.

In a statement RIAA stated: “mass infringement of copyrighted sound recordings copied and exploited without permission by two multi-million-dollar music generation services. AI companies, like all other enterprises, must abide by the laws that protect human creativity and ingenuity

Supporting their copyright claim, the RIAA also cited comments from an early investor in Suno AI confirming that Suno AI used copyrighted content to train their models.

All the biggest music labels have united against two budding startups who aimed to revolutionize the music-making process, setting the stage for an expected heated lawsuit. If found guilty, the consequences can be quite substantial for both Suno & Udio.
