In a nostalgic moment for electronic musicians, Korg has unveiled a long-awaited successor to one of the most beloved and iconic synthesizers ever created – the microKORG. First released in 2002, the original microKORG brought versatile virtual analog synthesis to the masses with its portable form factor, battery power, vocoder, and distinctive sounds. Now, the new aptly named microKORG aims to continue this legacy for both veteran knob-twiddlers and a new generation of bedroom producers alike.

Officially announced to be unveiled at the 2024 NAMM Show, the contemporary metallic-bodied microKORG features the familiar green lettering and genre-labeled preset dial. Yet the once sparse interface now hosts a vibrant 2.8-inch color display bringing Korg’s classic design into the modern era. This high-resolution screen animates tweaks to filters, envelopes, and more for visual feedback that reacts to the turn of a knob. Users can even view sound waves on a built-in oscilloscope.

Beneath the sleek interface, the next-generation microKORG runs an enhanced virtual analog engine with eight-voice polyphony – a major upgrade from the classic’s four-note limit. This unlocks thicker, richer textures suitable for any style. There’s also an expanded array of effects plus a new two-band parametric equalizer for professional post-processing.

While the central signal path and layout retain the original’s inviting simplicity, recording capabilities also address more advanced use. A new loop recorder facilitates layered performances. Users can additionally craft intricate sounds with revisualized virtual patch cords.

The microKORG 2 is not just a new instrument; it’s a new chapter in synth history,” said Korg in a statement.

Of course, no true successor would omit the microKORG’s iconic vocoder which made speaking synthesizer effects widely accessible. This new version takes vocal processing even further with integrated pitch correction, harmonizing, and expanded sonic options. The bundled gooseneck microphone keeps the old-school aesthetics while letting users warp vocals in vibrant ways.

Korg aims to retain the quirky, creative spirit that solidified the microKORG as a modern classic. With battery power for on-the-go composing and straightforward controls balanced by pro-grade engineering, this revamp seems poised to inspire another generation while respecting its lineage.

The new microKORG releases this June with black and white premium color variants available. Over two decades later, the microKORG’s sounds continue to evolve.
