World’s biggest record labels recently filed a copyright lawsuit against Suno & Udio AI Music Generators. Both Suno & Udio have now responded to the lawsuit

The music industry is in turmoil as AI technologies clash with record labels, casting doubt on their future. Suno aggressively criticized the labels’ outdated approach, while Udio gently denied wrongdoing in their response.

Suno AI Response

CEO Mikey Shulman responded to to Billboard stating “Suno’s mission is to make it possible for everyone to make music,” he said. “Our technology is transformative; it is designed to generate completely new outputs, not to memorize and regurgitate pre-existing content. That is why we don’t allow user prompts that reference specific artists. We would have been happy to explain this to the corporate record labels that filed this lawsuit (and in fact, we tried to do so), but instead of entertaining a good faith discussion, they’ve reverted to their old lawyer-led playbook. Suno is built for new music, new uses, and new musicians. We prize originality.”

Udio Response

At the core of Udio’s defense is its mission to “empower artists of all kinds to create extraordinary music.” The company argues that its AI model learns from examples, much like human music students, to understand musical ideas – the foundational elements of musical expression that no single entity owns. Udio emphasizes that they have designed their system to generate new musical ideas rather than replicate existing content. They claim to have implemented “state-of-the-art filters” to prevent the reproduction of copyrighted works or artists’ voices, addressing a key concern in the lawsuit.”

The company draws parallels between the current situation and historical technological advancements in music, such as synthesizers, drum machines, and digital recording technology. These innovations initially met with skepticism and ultimately expanded the music industry’s creative and economic horizons.

Udio is really excited about what AI can do for music. Udio envisions artists collaborating with fans, new genres emerging, and diverse talents entering the industry. Their tech has already helped a disabled musician create again and contributed to hit songs.

As the legal battle plays out, Udio remains steadfast in their belief that generative AI will play a crucial role in modern society.

This lawsuit’s outcome could set important precedents for copyright law’s treatment of AI-generated content, potentially shaping creative expression’s future in the digital age.
