This incredible instrument is a faithful recreation of the iconic modular synthesizer used by legendary keyboardist Keith Emerson over his decades-long career. Emerson, known for his work with the pioneering prog rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, made his custom Moog modular rig a centerpiece of the band’s innovative sound. The history behind this modular system dates back to 1970 when Bob Moog shipped a model I-CA synthesizer to Keith Emerson.
In 2017, Moog meticulously recreated Emerson’s one-of-a-kind instrument. Using the same parts, manufacturing processes, and techniques employed at the original Moog factory in the 1960s, this Emerson Moog Modular System is an astounding feat of engineering. Moog only produced 5 of these synthesizers, and one final unit was up for sale in 2017. The price tag? An astounding USD 150,000, making it the most expensive synth ever made. Whether it was sold or not remains unclear.
